Innovative solutions for the mobility of the future awarded prizes
At the German government's Digital Summit in Frankfurt am Main today, the five winners of the 2024 German Mobility Prize were honored. For the ninth time, the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV) recognized innovative projects that are rethinking and shaping the future of mobility. Federal Minister Dr. Volker Wissing stated:
"This year's winners impressively demonstrate how the mobility of the future can be designed. From innovative solutions to support blind and visually impaired people, to networked mobility systems that make public transport more efficient, to autonomous and emission-free transport options on water – the diversity of ideas shows how sustainable and forward-looking mobility can be. Furthermore, new concepts in local public transport, particularly in rural areas, are setting new standards for flexible and accessible mobility for all."
The winners of the ninth German Mobility Prize are:
The SmartAIs project was awarded in the Digital Transformation & AI category for its obstacle detection app. This app helps blind and visually impaired people move more safely in urban areas, thus enabling them to have improved, barrier-free mobility.
In the New Mobility Solutions category, the prize went to NeMo.bil. This project uses autonomous and digitally networked vehicles for on-demand public transport, offering a new form of sustainable and demand-responsive passenger and freight transport in rural areas. UNLEASH FUTURE BOATS received the award in the Design category for its autonomous, zero-emission boats. This innovation enables the environmentally friendly transport of people and goods on the water and sets a strong example for sustainable mobility. The SMILE24 project was honored in the Best Practices category for providing the most comprehensive local public transport service in rural Germany. With a flexible, accessible local transport service, SMILE24 brings mobility to remote regions and thus makes an important contribution to the mobility transition in rural areas. The presentation of the Audience Award was also eagerly anticipated, with live voting taking place from 12:30 pm on October 20th. Mobility enthusiasts, both on-site and via livestream, selected their favorites for the Audience Award from all the shortlisted projects. The MoveOn project received the most votes. MoveOn uses and analyzes the cycling data of more than 475,000 participants in the "City Cycling" campaign and makes this data available to municipalities for transportation planning. Numerous companies, startups, networks, initiatives from the mobility and digital sectors, as well as municipalities and public administrations, applied for this year's award. The winners were determined through several selection stages. A jury of
experts from business, science, society, and politics selected the most innovative projects in Germany from the shortlist. In addition, all citizens were able to vote for the Audience Award winner via live voting.
