The approximately 10.5 million dogs in German households are cherished members of the family and bring much joy to their owners. At the same time, however, owners are responsible for their pets – including any damage they may cause. With its new dog owner's liability insurance, HanseMerkur now offers even better protection in the event of personal injury, property damage, and financial loss, available in two coverage options. In addition to enhanced benefits, dog owners can optionally include coverage for poisoned bait. Furthermore, HanseMerkur provides policyholders with a best-performance guarantee in the Premium Plus coverage option.
“With our high-performing pet health insurance policies and now also with our optimized dog owner liability insurance, we continue to pursue our goal of being the leading pet insurer in Germany. We are now even offering a best-performance guarantee for our versatile and comprehensive new product: Should an insurer on the German market offer liability coverage that is more extensive than HanseMerkur's, the insurance coverage will be adjusted in the event of a claim,” explains Holger Ehses, Board Member for Customer Service, Risk Controlling, Organizational Development, and Product Development (Property, Liability, Accident, Motor Vehicle, and Pet Insurance).
Dog owners can choose between two comprehensive liability insurance options: "Comfort" and "Premium Plus." Both options provide full coverage for dog owners, those living in the same household as the policyholder, and non-commercial pet sitters – even when traveling. HanseMerkur also covers damage to rented property, such as items in a vacation apartment, as well as damage incurred abroad. In addition to everyday accidents, covered activities include dog training, participation in competitions or events like dog shows, and stays in boarding kennels. The policy also covers the private use of the animal as a therapy, assistance, search, guide, or rescue dog, and its use in volunteer work. A significant added benefit for pet owners: high coverage limits of €15 million ("Comfort") and €50 million ("Premium Plus").
HanseMerkur's high-performance dog owner's liability insurance can be taken out from €36.26 per year (e.g., for a pug, Comfort plan, with a €150 deductible, policyholder age 40, no prior claims). The optional "Poisoned Bait Protect" add-on provides additional coverage for emergency medical care, including diagnostics, treatment, or surgery for the animal, and also covers sharp objects swallowed by the dog. "Unfortunately, the danger of poisoned bait for dogs lurks everywhere and can require quick action. Our poisoned bait protection adds a valuable component to dog owner's liability insurance, covering your dog for an annual premium starting at just €8.90," says Holger Ehses.
